The Mully Half Marathon is a fundraiser for Mully University College which is run by the Kenyan charity Mully Children’s Family (MCF). The event is being organized with support from MCF Canada and the philanthropic group Old Guys in Action.
About Mully Children’s Family
As a six year old boy, Charles Mulli woke up in his Kenyan village hut to discover his parents had abandoned him. After years of struggle, Charles began to experience unprecedented success. He married his wonderful wife Esther, raised a family and excelled in business, becoming one of the wealthiest entrepreneurs in Kenya. In spite of his tremendous achievements, the plight of the growing street children problem in his country burdened his heart. At the height of his career he felt convicted to give away all his resources to pursue what would become a lifetime passion to rescue street children from the slums of Kenya.
Twenty-seven years later, Charles and Esther Mulli, their biological children and MCF staff have succeeded in rescuing over 10,000 street children from lives of abuse, addiction and abandonment. MCF currently cares for over 2,500 children at 3 homes and 3 day centres across Kenya.
About Mully University College
As the Mulli family grew, Charles and Esther increasingly found that local schools were unwilling to take on kids from the slums. Charles’s solution was to start his own schools. Over time they became some of the top ranked elementary and high schools in the country! Many of the graduates qualified for post-secondary education and Charles sent scores of them to university. But that is an expensive proposition. His next big idea? Build a university…And he asked Old Guys in Action to help. That’s when the idea of an annual fundraising marathon came about. Mully University College has been operating for two years now and will soon become Mully University. Run or donate to help academically qualified, financially needy young people grow into tomorrow’s African leaders. Become part of their story!
About MCF Canada
Mully Children’s Family Canada is a registered Canadian charity, committed to supporting the rescue and rehabilitation programs of MCF in Kenya. Our mission is to change Africa, one child at a time. We enable the rescue of Africa’s most vulnerable children, giving them the opportunity to survive and to develop their full potential. These children include abandoned babies, orphans of HIV/AIDS, boys forced into child labour, young teenaged mothers, and little girls forced into the sex trade. Each child is received into our large “family” and receives shelter, food, education/training, health care, counselling, and parental love.
Our support here, in Canada, is critical in the empowerment of these children to break the cycle of poverty, to achieve their own life goals, and to positively impact their communities.
About Old Guys in Action
Old Guys in Action is a somewhat elastic group of men and women of all ages who come together through events like the Annual Old Guys in Action Calgary Icebreaker Polar Dip, and local and international running and cycling events to raise awareness and funds for inspirational people and best in class organizations tackling challenging poverty and justice issues here and overseas.
The group has raised funds and made a difference in issues like global human trafficking, high rates of maternal mortality in Sierra Leone, Honduras and Guatemala, and the problem of orphaned street children in Kenya. Old Guy members have been associated with MCF for over a decade and participated in distance runs with the MCF kids in 2010 and 2014. This experience will be a highlight of your life. It was for us!
Old Guys in Action is proud to co-sponsor, co-organize and participate in the Mully Half Marathon in Ndalani, Kenya on May 14, 2017. Bernie and Ann Potvin; and Ross, Sophia, Liam and Jake Weaver will run with (behind) elite Kenyan runners like Patrick Makau (former world record holder for the marathon), Wesley Korir (former Boston marathon winner) and hundreds of kids from the Mully Children’s Family. Sanctioned by Athletics Kenya, this is the first of what is targeted to become a major international event that will include the full marathon distance starting in 2018.
The Mully Half Marathon was conceived as a fundraising event to help students attend Mully University College. However, Kenya is right now being affected by the most severe drought experienced in 65 years. MCF irrigation systems and greenhouses have been shut down, crops have failed, fish ponds have dried up and water must be trucked long distance for the 2500 children currently in MCF care. Under these circumstances, Dr. Charles Mully, founder of MCF, has asked us to direct our fundraising efforts to support MCF operations and drought relief efforts in local communities).
Please partner with us in making this inaugural event a success and supporting the MCF family through this terrible drought. As always, OGIA participants cover all our own costs, so 100% of your donation will go to support the wonderful kids of MCF! To give, please click the DONATE button in the right hand column of this page. You will be directed to a Mully Children’s Family Canada website form. On the final confirmation page of the donation process, please indicate “Team OGIA” and the runner(s) you want to sponsor. Thank you!!!
